Pronation
When your body weight is placed on the inside of the foot and have an uneven wear on the inner part of the shoe. Pronation is more common due to the natural way of feet turning inwards, this becomes a problem when one overpronates (meaning feet roll in excessively). This causes fallen arches and may experience planter fasciitis, knee, hip, and/or back pain.
Supination
When your body weight is placed on the outside of the foot and have an uneven wear on the outer part of the shoe, this reflects stress of the persons stride. Supination can cause ankle pain and soreness, shin splints, discomfort on the balls and heels of the feet, can experience calluses and/ or bunions on the outside of the foot. Ankle twists and injuries occur more often due to the ankle already being far off to the outside.
Treatment Options
The best way to help treat either pronation or supination is to get a shoe with the correct side of support for which way you tilt. Another way to get additional support is to get an orthotic, custom or over the counter.
Support
Support shoes are designed for people who's feet roll in too far or not far enough. The Brooks Bedlam is an example of a support category shoe.
Neutral
Neutral shoes are designed for people who have a "correct" running/ walking pattern. The Brooks Levitate is an example of a neutral category shoe.
